BREAST SURGERY IN IRELIA HEALTH

BREAST SURGERY

What is a Brest Surgery?

Breast surgery is a medical procedure that involves altering or reconstructing the breast tissue for various reasons, ranging from medical conditions to cosmetic enhancements. Whether you're considering surgery for aesthetic purposes or due to a medical necessity, it’s important to understand the different types of breast surgery available and what each entails.

In this blog, we’ll dive into the basics of breast surgery, the various types, and how to determine the best option for you.

Types of Breast Surgery:

•  Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants)

•  Breast Reduction

•  Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

•  Breast Reconstruction

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as breast implants, is a cosmetic surgery that enhances the size, shape, and fullness of the breasts. Women typically choose this procedure for a variety of reasons, including aesthetic goals or following a mastectomy.

Types of Implants:

Saline Implants: These are filled with sterile salt water. They are inserted empty and then filled once in place, which allows for smaller incisions.

Silicone Implants: These are pre-filled with a silicone gel that mimics the natural feel of breast tissue. They are often preferred due to their more natural appearance and feel.

Gummy Bear Implants: A type of silicone implant with a firmer, gel-like consistency that holds its shape better, reducing the risk of rupture.

Procedure:

The surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours and is done under general anesthesia. Incisions can be made in several areas: under the breast (inframammary), around the nipple (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). The implants are then placed either under the chest muscle (submuscular) or above it (subglandular).

Recovery:

Recovery usually takes a few weeks. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort, which typically subsides after a few days. Full recovery is typically achieved within 6 weeks, although strenuous activities should be avoided for up to 3 months.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with the body. This surgery is often sought by women who experience physical discomfort due to large breasts, such as back pain, neck pain, and skin irritation.

Procedure:

The surgeon removes excess tissue through incisions, which are typically made around the areola, extending down the breast, and sometimes along the breast fold. The remaining breast tissue is then reshaped and lifted. In some cases, the nipple and areola may also need to be repositioned.

Recovery:

Post-surgery, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which usually resolves after a few weeks. Activity restrictions apply for 4-6 weeks, with patients advised to avoid heavy lifting and exercise. Full recovery can take several months.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure designed to lift and firm sagging breasts. This surgery does not change the size of the breast but rather the shape. It is often sought by women who experience sagging due to aging, weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Procedure:

During the procedure, excess skin is removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped. The nipple-areola complex is usually repositioned higher on the breast for a more youthful appearance. The incisions are typically made around the areola, down to the breast fold, or in a lollipop or anchor shape.

Recovery:

After surgery, patients typically experience swelling and discomfort. Recovery generally takes 2-3 weeks, but it may take a few months for the final results to fully settle. Most patients can return to normal activities after about 3-4 weeks, but heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided for 6 weeks.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure performed to rebuild the breast after a mastectomy (removal of the breast, usually due to cancer). The goal of this surgery is to restore the breast to a more natural shape, size, and appearance.

Types of Implants:

  • Implant-based Reconstruction: Involves the use of silicone or saline implants to rebuild the breast mound. A tissue expander may first be placed to gradually stretch the skin before the permanent implant is inserted.

  • Autologous (Flap) Reconstruction: Uses tissue from another part of the patient’s body (such as the abdomen, back, or thighs) to recreate the breast. This technique may provide a more natural feel, as it uses the patient's own tissue.

Procedure:

The reconstruction process can be immediate (performed at the same time as the mastectomy) or delayed (performed months or years later). The choice of method depends on several factors, including the patient’s health, cancer treatment, and personal preferences.

Recovery:

Recovery from breast reconstruction can take several months, depending on the complexity of the procedure. Initial healing from surgery may take 4-6 weeks, with complete recovery and final results taking up to a year. Pain, swelling, and bruising are common post-surgery.
